Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Expansion

Chern Hall, University of California, Berkeley

More Info

Eighteen years after completing the original building for the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Glass Associates, Inc. was commissioned to design the 22,000 s.f. Chern Hall addition and renovation. The project includes a new auditorium, seminar rooms, commons rooms, a service kitchen, and an expansion of the library.

The new Simons Auditorium provides permanent seating for 135 and can accommodate up to 200 persons with temporary seating. Acoustically designed to allow lectures without electronic enhancement, it also provides a venue for musical performances, an important part of Institute life. The expanded facilities of the Austine McDonnell Hearst Library include a viewing room and access to the complete Institute video lecture catalogue.
